Arkansas Fight Song

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) - Arkansas ripped Georgia Tech with All - America Jim Mooty's speed and Joe Paul Alberty's fluid power Saturday and whipped the Yellow Jackets 14-7 in the 15th Gator Bowl game.

For Bobby Dodd, it was his first loss in nine bowl trips as head coach at Tech. And the coach who beat him- Arkansas' Frank Broyles- once played for Tech
and was a Dodd aide for six seasons.

The teams swapped first half touchdowns but Arkansas took charge after halftime. Mooty and his sophomore sidekick, Lance Alworth, were unable to break wide for long gains until the third quarter.

Then they turned it on. The 165 - pound Mooty started Arkansas' clinching touchdown march with a twisting, 24 yard sprint to midfield. Alworth chipped in with two good sweeps. Then Mooty barreled 19 yards for the touchdown.

Tech's heavier line, led by All-America center Maxie Baughan, whipped Arkansas during a first quarter which Tech completely dominated. After that there was little difference between the two lines.

Tech's touchdown came on the final play of the first quarter when quarterback Marvin Tibbetts raced 51 yards on a keeper play. Tibbetts, best known for his defensive play, was hurt on the second half kickoff and saw no more action.

Alberty, who runs with tremendous power for a 178-pounder, picked up some key first down yardage in Arkansas' 62 yard touchdown march in the second quarter. And the fullback smashed over from the 1.

An overflow record crowd of 45,104 and a national television audience saw the game.

Mooty, voted the most valuable player on the winning team, cracked Tech's defenses for 99 yards in 18 carries. Baughan, the most valuable player for the losers, turned in his usual sterling game, making tackles all over the field.

Fred Braselton, Tech's ace passer, launched a desperate aerial attack in the waning minutes of the game but Arkansas was ready and stopped every threat before any damage could be done.

The first two quarters presented a sharply contrasting picture.

Tech took the opening kickoff and ate up 11 1/2 minutes with a power drive which carried to the Razorback 8. On fourth down, Cal James tried a field goal but the kick was wide. Floyd Faucette and Taz Anderson ground out most of the yardage in that futile thrust.

After stopping Tech, Arkansas ran three plays and punted. That was the only time the Razorbacks had the ball on offense in the opening quarter.

Tibbetts made his scoring jaunt on the second play after the Arkansas punt. He faked a handoff, loped out to his left, cut back across the field and went over almost untouched.

Then Arkansas dominated the second quarter just as Tech had the first. Tech worked in only three scrimmage plays while Arkansas was staging its touchdown drive.

Mooty, Alworth and Alberty pounded out most of the 62 yards on short thrusts. Three times Alberty was called on for short first down yardage and each time he got what was needed. He wound up with 38 yards in 12 carries.

Tibbetts' long run made him Tech's top gainer with 59 yards in three runs. Anderson was next with 38 and Faucette got 23.

Tackles Jim Hollander and Marlin Epp and guards Gerald Gardner and Billy Luplow and linebacker Wayne Harris played big roles in containing Tech's attack.

The rain that the weatherman warned might come never did and the backs had good footing- something Broyles said his boys needed to offset Tech's 15-pound weight advantage.

Jim Monroe, who handled the Arkansas offense, mixed his plays well and threw just often enough to prevent Tech from massing its defense.

Mooty takes off on his winning touchdown run with a host of blockers.

Mooty bursts through Georgia Tech's defense on the 19 yard scoring run.

Georgia Tech's Marvin Tibbetts (15) scored Tech's only touchdown.

Alberty struggles across for Arkansas' first touchdown.
