Gator Bowl 1971
Auburn 35 Ole Miss 28 |
|
Sullivan jumped the favored Tigers into a 21-0 lead with a 37-yard run in the opening minute of the second period after he had thrown two first period touchdown passes. But Manning, playing with a cast on the arm he broke less than two months ago, had the Rebels in contention until they lost the ball on a fumble with barely a minute left to play.
Sullivan completed 27 of 41 for 351 yards and turned several timely runs while Manning hit on 19 of 28 for 180 yards and ran for 114 more.
Sullivan went all the way at quarterback for Auburn while Manning was relieved at times by Snug Chumbler, who accounted for the Rebels' last two touchdowns with a 23-yard pass to Jim Poole late in the third period and a one-yard sneak midway through the final period.
Manning, who broke his left arm on Nov. 7 and played far below his usual form in a Dec. 5 game with LSU, was obviously hampered by his cast Saturday but kept the sellout crowd of more than 71,000 on its collective feel with his heroics.
He scored the Rebels first touchdown with a one-yard run in the first period and six minutes later threw a 34-yard touchdown pass to Floyd Franks He also played a key role in the Rebels' other two touchdowns as he turned in a 42-yard run, apparently hurting his arm just before Chumbler threw the scoring strike to Poole and returned to turn in a 37 yard run in the drive that ended with Chumbler's touchdown.
Auburn appeared set to run Ole Miss clean off the field during the first 25 minutes as the Tigers scored three touchdowns, missed two others by a yard, and had a wide field goal.
Sullivan threw touchdown passes of 13 and 7 yards to Terry Beasley and Alvin Bresler, respectively, and had his 7-yard run in that span. He also passed the Tigers down to the Ole Miss two-yard line with five minutes to go in the first period, but failed by inches on a quarterback sneak.
Sullivan again passed the Tigers to the Ole Miss two midway in the second period but Auburn had an apparent touchdown called back on an Ole Miss penalty and fullback Wallace Clark fumbled the ball out of the endzone on the next play for a touchback.
Ahead 21-14 in a half in which they should have run up a lopsided score, Auburn made it 28-14 five and one-half minutes in the third period when Mickey Zofko ripped across from six yards out following a 42-yard Sullivan to Beasley pass, but as it turned out, the winning touchdown was scored not by the Auburn offense but by All-America safety Larry Willingham, who scored on a 55-yard punt return with nine seconds remaining in the third period.
Ole Miss had held at its one yard line for the third time in the game with a minute and one-half before Willingham's Gator Bowl record run and appeared, for a moment, to have gotten out of trouble when Larry Northam got off a high 48 yard punt.
