OSU Fight Song

SAN DIEGO (UPI) Heisman Trophy winner Barry Sanders completed one of the most sensational seasons in college football history (video) by rushing for 227 yards and five touchdowns to spark No. 12 Oklahoma State to a 62-14 rout of No. 15 Wyoming.

Sanders, who set NCAA records with 2,553 yards rushing this season and 37 touchdowns, scintillated the crowd of 60,178 by scoring three times in a 28-point third quarter for Oklahoma State, which had led 17-7 at halftime.

Oklahoma State, 10-2, amassed 698 total yards on offense to Wyoming's 204. Wyoming was third in the nation in scoring offense coming into the game, averaging 41 points per game. Oklahoma State was first with 47 points per game.

It was the second consecutive loss in the Holiday Bowl for Western Athletic Conference champion Wyoming, 11-2. Quarterback Randy Welniak ran for both of Wyoming's touchdowns. He completed 15 of 30 passes for 165 yards.

Wyoming's running threat, Dabby Dawson, sprained his ankle late in the first quarter and did not return. Dawson, who had averaged 94 yards per game rushing, carried just once and lost 2 yards.

On his third carry, Sanders took a pitch from Mike Gundy and motored 33 yards for a touchdown through a hole on the right side.

Wyoming tied the score 7-7 with 50 seconds to play in the first quarter on Welniak's 4-yard run around the right end. Welniak completed a 19-yard pass to reserve running back Scott Gibson on a third-and-18 play to keep the 46-yard drive alive.

Sanders scored his second TD on a 2-yard plunge that capped a 93-yard drive and gave Oklahoma State a 14-7 with 1:48 to play in the half. Hart Lee Dykes caught a 22-yard pass on third and 12 at the Oklahoma State's 17 and Sanders set up the score with a 30-yard reception to Wyoming's 18.

Dykes, who had 10 receptions for 163 yards, made another big catch- a 26-yarder- with five seconds left in the half, giving Gary Blanchard time to kick a 33-yard field goal and stake Oklahoma State to a 17-7 lead.

Oklahoma State took a 24-7 lead on Gundy's 12-yard touchdown pass to Brent Parker with 11:53 to play in the third quarter.

Sanders, a junior who carried 29 times, keyed the 80-yard drive with a 30-yard run, 15 of them with safety Darryl Harris hanging on. Harris also was penalized for a face mask.

Wyoming scored with 8:31 left in the quarter to draw to 24-14. Welniak ran 4 yards for a touchdown behind a block from running back DeWaine Jones.

Sanders shrugged off three defenders and ran 67 yards for a touchdown that provided Oklahoma State a 31-14 lead (video).

Sanders scored touchdowns of 1 and 10 yards (video) to give the Cowboys a 45-14 lead after three quarters.

Blanchard kicked a 19-yard field goal to give Oklahoma a 48-14 1ead and Dykes got a TD on a 25-yard reception with 6:58 to play. Reserve quarterback Chris Smith closed out the scoring with a 5-yard TD run with 1:13 to play.

In the end, Gundy completed 20-of-24 passes for 315 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 17-yard pass from Sanders to set up another score. Not only bowls records fell. Gundy’s 315 yards through the air set a school record.

The Cowboys’ 698 yards in total offense was the third-highest output in OSU history. Oklahoma State’s defense proved to be the biggest surprise of the contest, however, as they allowed Wyoming only 33 yards rushing. Sim Drain, named the Defensive Player-of-the-Game, had four tackles and two sacks and led the OSU defense to its lowest yardage allowance since 1986.

Sanders gave a Heisman performance.

OSU Coach Pat Jones and Sanders produced an historic season.
