The Liberty Bowl has had three different homes. From 1959 through 1963, it was played in cold weather before small crowds in Philadelphia. This is where the name was derived. It moved in 1964 to the Atlantic City Convention Hall, where the game drew only 6,000 fans, but was the first bowl game to be played indoors. The bowl was then moved south to Memphis, TN, where it finally found a suitable host stadium and community. In spite of its erratic early history, the Liberty Bowl is one of the oldest college bowl games.  It now features a Conference USA team against an at-large opponent. Traditionally a December game, the Liberty Bowl was played in January for the first time in 2009.
