The
1983 Pro Bowl marked the
second straight year in
which the game was decided
in the last seconds. For the
second straight year scoring
went back and forth. The
attendance at Aloha Stadium
was 49,883 and the coaches
were Walt Michaels of the
Jets and Tom Landry of the
Cowboys.
The AFC got on the board in
the first quarter with a 34
yard touchdown strike from
San Diego’s Dan Fouts to
Wesley Walker of the Jets.
Kansas City’s Art Still then
sacked Joe Theismann of
Washington in the end zone
for a safety and a 9-0 AFC
lead at the end of the first
quarter. The NFC came back
in the 2nd quarter to take
the lead on a 3 yard
touchdown run by William
Andrews of the Falcons and a
35 yard field goal by
Washington’s Mark Moseley.
Before the half, Rolf Beirschke of San Diego hit a
29 yard field goal and the
AFC led 12-10 at halftime.
The third quarter produced
only one score on a 1 yard
touchdown run by the
Raiders’ Marcus Allen. The
AFC led 19-10 at the end of
three. Moseley kicked a
field goal to bring the NFC
to within 19-13. The AFC was
driving again late in the
fourth when Fouts under threw
his target in the end zone
and the pass was intercepted
by Everson Walls of Dallas.
That set up the final drive
of the game, during which
the NFC faced a fourth and
seven on the AFC 25 yard
line. But Green Bay’s John
Jefferson made a fingertip
grab of of a 14 yard pass
from Dallas’ Danny White to
keep the drive alive. White
then connected with
Jefferson again on an eleven
yard touchdown with just :31
to play. Moseley added the
extra point and the NFC had
come back to win. The final
score was 20-19.
Dan Fouts, who attempted 30
passes, set Pro Bowl records
for most completions (17)
and yards (274). Fouts and
Jefferson were voted
co-winners of the player of
the game award.
