AFC 29

NFC 24

February 1, 1998

Before the 1998 Pro Bowl, Seattle's Warren Moon was called to Hawaii to replace Denver's John Elway for the AFC, making him the oldest player in the game by 4 years. A crowd of 49,995 saw the game at Aloha Stadium. The coaches were Bill Cowher of Pittsburgh and Steve Mariucci of San Francisco.

In the first quarter, San Francisco’s Steve Young completed a 21 yard pass to Panther’s tight end Wesley Walls on third down and ended an 11 play drive with a 22 yard touchdown toss to wide receiver Herman Moore of the Detroit Lions. The AFC came back to tie it on Kansas City’s Andre Rison's 22 yard touchdown grab on a pass from Jacksonville’s Mark Brunell. But, Young took his team 71 yards on only seven plays in the second quarter. The drive culminated with a 36 yard touchdown toss to Arizona wide receiver Rob Moore. Young faked a reverse to Minnesota receiver Cris Carter, then dropped back in the pocket and threw a perfect pass to Moore, who was wide open. The NFC built on the 14-7 lead later in the second quarter when Green Bay running back Dorsey Levens scored from 12 yards out just before the half. The touchdown run gave the NFC a comfortable 21-7 lead at the half.

The AFC scored the only points of the third quarter on a Jimmy Smith 14 yard pass from New England’s Drew Bledsoe. The score at the end of the period was 21-14. In the 4th quarter, Detroit’s Jason Hanson kicked a 35 yard field goal to give the NFC a 24-14 lead. Jacksonville's Mike Hollis countered with a 48 yard field goal with 8:51 remaining. With the NFC leading, 24-17, Moon completed a 57 yard pass to Oakland's Tim Brown and Tennessee's Eddie George scored on a 4 yard run with 2:31 left. The AFC decided to go for two, but the conversion failed. The NFC still led, 24-23. But, on their final possession, Atlanta’s Chris Chandler fumbled an exchange to give Moon one last chance. Moon capped the comeback on a 1 yard quarterback sneak with 1:49 remaining. The final score was 29-24.

Moon, who was 4 of 8 for 89 yards and rushed for one touchdown, was voted player of the game in his ninth Pro Bowl appearance. For the first time in memory, if not Pro Bowl history, two players were ejected for fighting: San Francisco guard Kevin Gogan and Denver’s defensive end Neil Smith (fight in which one player was ejected; see: Pro Bowl, December 27, 1942).

Veteran Warren Moon wins it on a sneak.
