Daryle Lamonica remains the same enigma in the scouts' reports he has
been during his nine-year career, a passer who seems to have all the
attributes necessary to reach the outstanding category but still is on
the outside looking in.
Size- Lamonica has always had it at 6-foot-3 and 215 pounds. Throwing
ability- Lamonica has always had it and a 4 rating by the scouts proves
it. Experience- Lamonica has it now with nine years behind him.
But, according to the scouts, the size and the throwing ability have not
found the necessary complements and so Lamonica winds up with a rating
that leaves him far short of the outstanding category in the middle
group of quarterbacks.
Throwing ability, as a matter of fact, is the only department in which
Lamonica is rated significantly above average. The most damaging marks
are in leadership, in which the former Notre Dame star is rated only
2.5, and in reading defenses, in which Lamonica is rated 3.
The scouts ratings explain, in part, the heroics old George Blanda has
been called on to perform for the Raiders over the past two years.
The ratings also can't help leave people wondering how Lamonica would be
rated if the embellishments that enhance throwing ability were suddenly
to emerge. But will they?
