Reggie Collier

Birmingham Stallions

Reggie Collier was an outstanding quarterback at Southern Mississippi. He was taken in the sixth round of the 1983 NFL draft by the Dallas Cowboys and was the third player taken in the USFL draft, chosen by the Birmingham Stallions. He chose to sign with the Stallions and was the starting quarterback on opening day. He played in 7 games before being traded to Washington Federals after Birmingham signed Cliff Stoudt. In Washington in 1984, Collier replaced an injured Mike Hohensee and played well. The Federals moved to Orlando and became the Renegades in 1985. Collier had an outstanding season under Coach Lee Corso’s system. He completed 229 of 427 passes for 2,578 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also ran for 606 yards, including one game in which he rushed for 171 yards, the pro record for a quarterback. He was expected to compete with newly acquired, John Reaves, for the starting quarterback position had the League survived.

In 1986, Collier signed to play with the Dallas Cowboys. It did not work out well as Coach Tom Landry insisted he stay in the pocket and Collier was a runner. He was moved to wide receiver after two games and traded to Pittsburgh in the off season. He played two games for the Steelers in 1987.  Collier continued his football career with a stint in the Arena Football League from 1991-1993.
