In 1974, the Washington Ambassadors of the newly organized WFL announced the signing of the New Orleans Saints’ quarterback, Bob Davis, to play if the NFL would release him from his contract. Davis had formerly played with the New York Jets. The Ambassadors had just secured the services of the man who would become the all-time leading quarterback in the final WFL stats.
The Ambassadors relocated to Orlando as the Florida Blazers. Coach Jack Pardee assembled a group of solid veterans who meshed perfectly as a team. Davis, an NFL journeyman teamed with rookie Tommy Reamon, who led the W.F.L. in rushing with 1,576 yards. The defense was tough, finishing second against the run and leading the W.F.L. with 58 sacks.
Davis, who passed for the third most yardage in the WFL in the inaugural season, led the Blazers to a 14-6 record and first place in the WFL’s Eastern Division. He led the Blazers to a first round victory over the Philadelphia Bell in the first round of the playoffs then engineered a stunning upset of the Memphis Southmen in the semifinals. In that game, Davis was injured and forced to leave early. In the league championship against Birmingham, the Blazers trailed 22-0 at the start of the 4th period. Davis led Florida back in a rally that fell just short, as the Americans claimed the only WFL title, 22-21.
