Mike Taliaferro

Houston Texans

After stepping into the starting role after former Raiders’ #1 draft choice, Eldridge Dickey failed to report to camp, former NFL and AFL quarterback, Mike Taliaferro, a 1964 Rose Bowl champion who played for the New York Jets, Boston Patriots and Buffalo Bills, stepped into the starting role. The Texans also brought in running back Jim Nance who had played with Taliaferro in Boston and was the all-time leading rusher from the old AFL.

The Texans, who were underfinanced from the beginning, survived in Houston for 11 games. (In week 12, the Houston Texans were scheduled to play in Birmingham against the Americans. At The 3-7-1, the club faced Birmingham at Legion Field, and were basically homeless. It was announced that they would move to Shreveport, LA and head coach, Jim Garrett, encouraged the players to stay in Houston. He was suspended and fired and Taliaferro retired rather than move with the team to Shreveport.
