The trend had been for teams with Super Bowl failure in the past to redeem themselves in following years, but this game featured two teams that fit that description. Somebody had to fail.

A major story of Super Bowl VIII was the Vikings having to practice at an inadequate high school playing field, while the Dolphins practiced at the Houston Oilers' facilities. Vikings' Coach Bud Grant was enraged and spoke out. He was reprimanded by Pete Rozelle.
