A high school All-American quarterback, Risher starred at LSU and is still the Tigers’ career record-holder for completion percentage, completing 62% of his passes from 1980-82. He was taken in round 15 of the initial USFL draft in 1983. He played two seasons in the USFL with the Arizona Wrangers, leading the team as its starter in the inaugural season. Following the USFL, Risher spent the entire 1985 season as the back-up quarterback to Steve DeBerg and Steve Young with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ironically, Risher lost his chance to play in the NFL due to the USFL dispersion draft that had also brought Steve Young from the USFL.
Cut by Bucs in 1986, he spent part of the 1987 season with the Green Bay Packers. Later, he became head coach and general manager of the Baton Rouge Blaze, an expansion team in the lower tier of Arena Football. The team folded after one season, and Risher went on to coach and manage the Mobile Wizards in Alabama.
